Customer’s Challenge
Reducing nitrogen levels in the leachate pond
Merab (Mellanskånes Renhållnings AB) operates a waste management and recycling center at Rönneholms Mosse. The facility also includes three landfills—two closed and one active. When it rains or snows over the landfill areas, the water carries pollutants, organic matter, and nutrients such as nitrogen. If released untreated into natural water systems, this can harm the environment or lead to eutrophication. To prevent this, the water is treated in various leachate ponds. In one of these ponds, Merab sought to optimize the separation of nitrogen and organic matter while improving the pond’s hydraulics.
The Solution
Barrier wall forming an aerated containment basin
Inside the containment basin, Eden Aquatech installed two aerators to create a high-oxygen nitrification zone, optimizing conditions for aerobic bacteria essential for nitrogen conversion. The water then continued into a denitrification zone. Initial results already show improved nitrogen levels.
