Biological treatment with documented results

The HolKof™ Bioreactor has a filter medium on which a living biofilm builds up. The reactor is based on the biofilm principle and the so-called mammoth-pump effect, which provides controlled circulation and throughflow of the filter medium for optimal treatment.

The system was developed first and foremost to reduce ammonium – one of the biggest problems for landfill owners and one of the main causes of eutrophication in nature. Results show that the treatment efficiency for ammonium can be doubled compared with earlier methods.

In the standard version, the biofilm carrier provides over 1,800 m² of active biofilm surface – a very large treatment capacity in a compact footprint. The design and capacity can always be tailored to the customer’s needs.

How the treatment process works

The bioreactor is designed for efficient aerobic and anaerobic breakdown of organic material (BOD), reduction of nitrogen compounds, oxidation of redox metals and precipitation of phosphate. The design also allows the reactor to be used to remove, for example, chlorate.

A centrally placed aerator generates small air bubbles that lift the water up through mesh tubes covered with biofilm, where both aerobic and anaerobic breakdown occur simultaneously. Ammonium is oxidised at the surface of the biofilm into nitrate, which further inside the biofilm is used as an electron acceptor and reduced to nitrogen gas. BOD is consumed during denitrification, while phosphorus and redox metals are oxidised and bound in the sediment.

By adjusting the operating conditions, favourable conditions are created for the right microorganisms, with the aim of:

  • Reducing the amount of organic carbon and thereby preventing oxygen depletion in receiving water bodies.
  • Oxidising ammonium into nitrate and promoting its further conversion into nitrogen gas.
  • Reducing substances that contribute to eutrophication – such as nitrogen, phosphorus and organic material – as well as oxidising redox metals and other reduced substances.
