For Nordic municipalities

Healthier lakes
and ponds.
Without chemicals or dredging.

Stopped algal blooms in Nynäshamn. Saved the fish in Lidingö. We restore the biological system that lets water clean itself, adapted to Nordic conditions.

The challenge

Why are so many lakes and ponds in poor condition?

When oxygen disappears from the bottom layer, sediments begin leaking nutrients back into the water. This drives algal blooms and disrupts the entire ecosystem. Traditional methods often treat the symptom, not the cause.

Algal blooms and odour

Eutrophication leads to green water, reduced visibility and foul-smelling sulphur compounds. A burden on bathing waters and recreational areas.

Oxygen depletion and fish death

Thick ice and heavy biological load cause acute oxygen failure. Risk of mass fish death, especially in smaller water bodies during winter.

Internal loading from sediment

Accumulated phosphorus and organic material leak back from the bottom for years. The lake "falls back" even after costly external interventions.

Natural Balance Restoration

Six steps to a self-cleaning water environment

The method does not rely on a single measure. We gradually restore the processes that allow a lake to function as a natural treatment system.

01
Pre-analysis

Understand the problem

A root-cause analysis of loading, sediment and ecology. Reveals which measures actually work for your specific water body.

02
Flow control

Create control in the water

Containment booms limit the spread of particles and nutrients, and delineate treatment zones at the inlet.

03
Bioreactor

Build biological treatment

Biosurfaces and bioreactors create large surfaces where microorganisms form biofilms that break down organic material.

04
Microbes

Restore the microbiology

Selected microorganisms strengthen the lake's biological treatment processes and stabilise decomposition in water and sediment.

05
Oxygenation

Secure the oxygen balance

Stabilises water chemistry, reduces phosphorus leakage from the sediment and lays the foundation for effective biological decomposition.

06
Process validation

Follow up on the results

Continuous analyses of water quality and ecology ensure that the restoration leads to a stable and long-term healthy ecosystem.

The flow leads the water through the system. The bioreactor is where the treatment takes place. The biology does the work. The oxygen keeps the process stable.

Documented results

Two municipalities that acted in time

When oxygen fails or the ecosystem collapses, the time window is short. Here are two examples where rapid, targeted measures made the difference.

Svandammen i Nynäshamn
Project · Nynäshamn

From bad odour to a fresh oasis

Svandammen suffered acute oxygen depletion. The result was murky water, algal blooms and a strong sulphur smell. Two aerators from Eden Aquatech broke the anaerobic process, the smell disappeared, and the water regained its clarity.

It is a pure joy to see all the happy birds in Svandammen now. The municipality has done exemplary work in oxygenating the pond. Monica Stålborg Billberg, resident of Nynäshamn

Emergency response · Lidingö

Emergency response stopped fish death in Lidingö

When Lake Ekholmsnässjön suffered acute oxygen depletion under the February ice, there was critical risk of mass fish death. Rapid deployment of airTURBO RV2, developed for the Nordic climate, supplied oxygen directly into the water masses and turned the situation around before the ecosystem collapsed.

It draws in a large volume of air, roughly one cubic metre per second, and mixes it with the oxygen-depleted water. Jerker Idestam-Almquist, water strategist, City of Lidingö

Questions municipalities often ask

Click to expand. Here you will find technical details about the method, the risks of traditional measures and strategies for larger water bodies.

Dredging is often considered the standard solution for sediment accumulation, but for larger water environments the method carries significant risk:

  • Resuspension of pollutants. Mechanical disturbance releases bound heavy metals and environmental toxins (mercury, PCB) from the sediments back into the water column.
  • Short-term symptom treatment. Dredging removes the sediment, but does not address the cause of nutrient input. Without microbial stability the sludge quickly returns.
  • Ecological disruption. The mechanical process eradicates the natural benthic life that the lake's self-cleaning ability depends on.

Instead we use in situ microbial decomposition which stabilises the sediments without disturbing the ecosystem.

A common misconception is that biological restoration requires treatment of the entire water volume. For larger water bodies this is rarely the most rational approach.

We work according to the principle of strategic point treatment, where powerful measures are placed where they do the most good: at the lake's inlets and loading points. A "biological lock" at the main inlet treats water continuously before it spreads into the larger water mass.

In lakes where the sediment is already saturated with phosphorus, we use an integrated strategy:

  • The microbiology stabilises the inlet and breaks down new organic material.
  • Strategic precipitation (for example with aluminium salt) is used as needed on the large sediment surfaces to bind existing phosphorus.
  • Oxygenation prevents the phosphorus from being released again when oxygen fails.

The combination ensures that the lake does not "fall back" into internal loading when a chemical effect fades.

Every project starts with a pre-analysis, a root-cause mapping of loading, sediment chemistry and ecology for your specific water body. The result is a treatment plan with concrete, measurable result indicators.

During restoration, parameters such as visibility, oxygen level, phosphorus, nitrogen and biodiversity are monitored through continuous sampling. You receive documentation you can share with political leadership, water authorities and residents.
