A grease problem solved with microbes at Ishøj Forsyning
A pumping well at Ishøj Forsyning was repeatedly blocked by grease from nearby restaurants and required jetting or vacuum tanker emptying every week. With biological dosing of MBS microbes the grease blockages disappeared, and the need for jetting went from weekly to roughly once a quarter.
Two battery-powered dosing pumps supply microbes automatically
The treatment was carried out in the middle of the high season. Here are the clearest changes for the pumping well.
From weekly jetting to an estimated once per quarter.
Close monitoring was replaced by a brief routine check every four weeks.
No grease build-up and no need for jetting or vacuum tanker emptying.
Spared the odour and noise of repeated cleaning and vacuum tanker work.
A pumping well at Ishøj Forsyning suffered recurring problems with large quantities of grease, which caused low flow and blockages. The well receives wastewater from nearby restaurants, which meant frequent grease build-up that clogged the well, a need for jetting or vacuum tanker emptying every week, and a constant risk of operational disruption and weakened security of supply.
Beyond the cost and the burden on staff there was a more fundamental problem: jetting simply pushed the grease further into the sewer network, where it created new problems downstream. The symptom was moved, but the cause was still there.
Ishøj Forsyning introduced treatment with MBS microbes directly in the pumping well. The aim was to break down the grease build-up biologically and thereby reduce the need for heavy, manual intervention. The microbes are supplied automatically by two dosing pumps that continuously deliver the right amount.
The dosing pumps are battery-powered with a service life of up to six months and require neither electricity nor permanent installation. The equipment can easily be lowered into the well and moved to a new dosing point if required, which makes the solution flexible.
After the introduction of MBS microbes a marked improvement was observed. After twelve weeks there were none of the earlier grease blockages, and there was no need for either a vacuum tanker or jetting. The pumps were spared unnecessary wear, and daily inspection could be reduced.
After sixteen weeks the dosing was adjusted. There was still no need to jet the well or empty it of grease, and this is estimated to be necessary again after twenty weeks at the earliest. Where the well previously required weekly monitoring, it now needs only a brief routine check every four weeks, in connection with changing the containers.
We had not expected the effect to be this powerful. We now expect to jet the well only every 4 months – compared with once a week. The treatment took place in absolute peak season, and even so we have seen results we had not imagined. It is a gain not only for the finances, but also for the environment and the surrounding area.Ishøj Forsyning
From weekly to quarterly jetting, with markedly lower operating costs.
Less vacuum tanker transport, and grease is broken down instead of being pushed further into the network.
Fewer manual tasks for staff and no disturbance for restaurant guests.
Prevents acute blockages and strengthens security of supply.
Do the pipes get cleaner too?
Yes. The culture is pumped out into the sewer network, where decomposition is accelerated and deposits loosen and are flushed out with the flow, which improves pumping efficiency.
Can the treatment affect our treatment plant negatively?
No. The microbes rarely reach the treatment plant in significant concentrations. At the right dosage they instead optimise the existing processes.
Does the treatment extend the service life of the sewer network?
Yes, considerably. Less hydrogen sulphide means less sulphuric acid, which protects concrete, steel covers, pumps and other sewer equipment.
Does it require electricity and permanent installation?
No. The dosing equipment is lowered into the well, is battery-powered with up to six months of service life and can easily be moved when needed.
We help municipalities and utilities reduce grease, odour and blockages biologically, with less manual work and a longer service life for the sewer network.
